Abstract

Introduction: The professionalization of nursing assistants constitutes a key process to strengthen human resources in healthcare and improve the quality of care in Colombia. This transition involves not only the acquisition of new technical and scientific competencies but also the transformation of professional roles and the consolidation of professional identity.. Objective: To analyze nurses’ perceptions of the competencies acquired by nursing assistants who completed professional nursing training.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nunc vitae urna ut nunc auctor egestas. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with professional nurses from healthcare institutions in Medellín and the Metropolitan Area. The sample excluded professionals who had previously worked as nursing assistants. A self-developed instrument was used, validated through expert judgment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Among participants, 84.6% were women and 60% held a bachelor’s degree. Regarding the “Being” competency, 75.4% reported an excellent perception, highlighting empathy, effective communication, and humanized care. For the “Doing” competency, adherence to protocols (84.6%) and teamwork (81.5%) were emphasized, although lower levels of autonomy were observed. In the “Knowing” competency, 69.2% showed limited integration of research findings. Overall, 73.8% rated professional behaviors as excellent. Conclusion: The transition from nursing assistant to professional nurse represents a process of integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Educational and workplace environments that promote leadership and research are essential to strengthen professional practice and enhance the healthcare system.
