Impacto de una intervención educativa en el conocimiento sobre el cáncer cervicouterino en estudiantes universitarios

Introduction: Cervical cancer, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), is one of the leading causes of gynecological death worldwide, particularly in developing countries. In Chile, mortality from this disease is high, with approximately 600 women dying annually due to lack of prevention and social inequalities. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of an educational intervention on knowledge about cervical cancer in first-year pedagogy students. Methodology: An educational intervention was designed and implemented, based on three 45-minute workshops focused on the etiology, risk factors, and prevention methods of cervical cancer. The students' knowledge was assessed before and after the intervention using a validated questionnaire. Results: The results showed a significant increase in the level of knowledge following the intervention. 100% of the participants understood the relationship between HPV and cervical cancer, the importance of vaccination, and the relevance of the Papanicolaou (Pap) smear test. A notable improvement was also observed in the knowledge about risk factors, such as early onset of sexual activity and the use of contraceptives. Conclusion: The educational intervention was effective in improving knowledge and awareness about cervical cancer, underlining the importance of implementing continuous educational programs as a key strategy in public health promotion.
