Abstract
This article examines the application of Sister Callista Roy's Adaptation Model in caring for a pediatric patient with Prune Belly Syndrome. According to this model, the patient is viewed as an adaptive system that responds to internal and external stimuli through coping mechanisms. Nursing plays a key role in this process by providing comprehensive care that preserves health, assessing physiological responses, self-concept, role performance, and interdependence (1,2).
In the case of Prune Belly Syndrome, nursing care focuses on improving respiratory and renal function, managing pain, optimizing nutrition, and offering psychological support to the patient and their family. The intervention begins with a thorough assessment of the patient’s individual needs, identifying stress factors and available coping resources. This approach enhances the patient’s quality of life and empowers the family to participate actively in caregiving.
Implemented strategies include specific physical exercises to improve muscle tone and assistance with managing medical devices for urinary issues. Roy's Adaptation Model thus provides a comprehensive framework for addressing complex cases such as Prune Belly Syndrome, guiding nursing practice toward adaptation-based and patient-centered care.
